It's About Who
But I’m nearly done (likely will finish today) with an INCREDIBLE book called Who Not How.
I’ve said about a couple of books recently that I feel they give me an “unfair advantage” in life - which I’ll pay a pretty penny for. (life is neither fair nor easy)
This one fits perfectly into that category.
And as always, it’s all about the application.
Anyone can read a life-changing book. Few apply the lessons within.
Throughout this book, I have been blown away by the treasure trove of lessons.
It’s challenged my mindset about collaboration and pushed me to see each individual as unique, and in that, an absolute gift.
Funny when you walk away from reading a business leadership book with one thought “Each life is such a gift”.
Every person has a unique ability that THEY bring to the table in every relationship, every role, every project. (yes, this applies to WAY MORE than just business)
The key is to discover that unique ability so that each person can be placed in a position where that unique ability is maximized.
For example, I am the last person on earth you want doing data entry.
I will turn a boring, basic task into jumbled, improper information.
One of the main reasons is that performing methodical, repetitive tasks is NOT my strength.
Fast-paced, high-stress, constantly changing scenarios are where I THRIVE.
So to maximize my crazy brain, I need to find a WHO (they start in 1.5 weeks - YAY) that can take care of those repetitive tasks so that I can get to all the crazy things flying at me every day.
Here's the thing though (and if there's one thing I HATE about social media AND college for the most part, it's this) our culture standardizes people to a massive fault.
We think “Oh, because I do repetitive tasks well that means I'm not as good as SO-AND-SO who's an outgoing sales consultant".
Or "well I need to become [whatever kind of person] to be successful in life".
Not true.
You're EXACTLY who you should be............
IF you're walking in YOUR strengths as an INDIVIDUAL. (and of course following the will of God... minor details ;P
While yes, we can categorize billions of people into fairly distinct "types," the danger is elevating one type of person above another.
This is where my reading one book and applying it may have a different outcome from you reading the same book and applying it.
We're different. That's actually CRAZY COOL!!
(at the same time, of course there are general lessons we all apply - don't misread what I'm typing :)
All that said - I'm so thrilled that YOU are uniquely you, and that I'm uniquely me.
And hey, who knows, maybe one day, our strengths can be used to do something amazing together :D
This is part of a multi-month process I'm going through in discovering that I'm truly getting into the Talent Optimization business rather than just simply professional services.
I recently came across this incredible survey by Culture Index, and I'm going to drop it here because it could be really cool to see what your strengths are!
It's a free survey and I make nothing from you filling it out. The results are pretty mind-blowing, but they're not paying me to sell anything so I'll stop and leave the link here.
(link will close in 5 business days)

I hope you have an AWESOME rest of your week!
